Drinking Sangria in Madrid

If you have visited Madrid in summer, you know nothing quenches thirst better than Sangria. This popular Spanish drink does not have a standard recipe, everybody has its own and of course they think theirs is the best one. Sangria mainly contains red wine, fresh fruit, fresh orange juice, soda and iced cubes.

There are new and creative recipes of sangria, like using sparkling wine instead of red wine, or just personalizing it with your favorite fruit. Anyway, Sangria is the best way to cool down and quenches your thirst during the warm Spanish summer. Tinto de Verano

Sangria requires many ingredients and fresh fruit. There is a simpler solution to turn red wine into a refreshing summer beverage. Tinto de Verano is a typical Spanish drink offer by many restaurants as part of lunch menu. It consists in red wine and “casera” a typical Spanish soda that has a sweet taste.

Sangria Traditional Recipe

There are many different Sangria recipes! Given the simplicity of this drink, it is really easy to improve it with your favorite fruit or beloved wine.  It can be prepared with strawberries, peaches or watermelon, or make it with white wine or red … but there is only one way to prepared traditional Sangría and today we are going to learn it.

Ingredients

  • 1 Bottle of red wine (It does not have to be an expensive wine since we going to add sugar, but not the worst of the store)
  • 3 Oranges
  • 3 Lemons
  • 4 Peaches
  • 3 tablespoons of sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of Cointreau
  • Ice

Directions

  1. Squeeze the juice of 2 oranges and 2 lemons. Cut in slices the remaining orange and lemon and store them for garnish.
  2. Peel and cut peaches into cubes. Since peaches are a summer fruit, you can use apples for your Winter Sangria recipe.
  3. In a jar, preferably made out of clay, placed peaches, orange juice, lemon juice, sugar and wine. Stir until sugar is dissolved.
  4. Put the Sangria to marinate in the refrigerator for two hours at least.
  5. Before serving add Cointreau for a special touch.
  6. When serving add ice in the jar and decorate the glasses with slices of lemon and orange.
